Jonathan Cheetham, VetMB, Diplomate ACVS, PhD

Dr. Jonathan Cheetham is currently an Associate Professor and Equine Surgeon at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, in its Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine.  His work focuses on peripheral nerve repair, specifically, understanding the relationship between the immune response to nerve injury and recovery and modulating the immune response to improve functional outcome after injury and restoring laryngeal function using regenerative medicine techniques combined with reinnervation.

The lab’s research is applied to both human and veterinary patients. Dr. Cheetham is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and holds a PhD from Cornell University.

Dr. Cheetham obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, United Kingdom.

Dr. Cheetham’s major professional interests include:

  • Clinical: Upper airway and orthopedic equine surgery.
  • Research: Peripheral nerve repair: Restoring function in the larynx, nasopharynx, and trachea using tissue engineering, reinnervation, and functional electrical stimulation.

Dr. Cheetham has authored numerous refereed publications and book chapters in addition to making many scientific and invited presentations.
