Jason E. Shoemaker, PhD

Dr. Jason Shoemaker is an Associate Professor, Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, at the University of Pittsburgh, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Computational & Systems Biology. Prior to his appointment at Pitt in 2015, Dr. Shoemaker held several research positions in Tokyo, Japan; namely, Project Assistant Professor & Computations Group Team Leader, University of Tokyo; Research Associate, Japan Science and Technology’s ERATO Infection-Induced Host Responses Project; and a Visiting Researcher at the Systems Biology Institute.

Dr. Shoemaker received a BS in Chemical Engineering Magna Cum Laude from the University of Florida in 2003, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2009 with a special emphasis on Systems Biology and Computer Science.

Dr. Shoemaker is a reviewer for the journals Frontiers in Systems Biology, PLoS One, Science, and Computational Biology and Chemistry.  He is a topic editor for Frontier’s Quantitative Biology and a guest associate editor for Frontier in Systems Biology. He is a member of American Institute of Chemical Engineering (2001-present, senior member), the Biomedical Engineering Society (2013, 2015), and the Society for Industrial and Applied Sciences (2004).  Dr. Shoemaker serves on the NSF Grant review panels for the Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems – Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering program.

His research interests include:  Immunology, machine learning, and systems biology.

For his work, Dr. Shoemaker has received many awards.  A few examples of these recognitions include:  NSF CAREER Award (2020); International Conference on Systems Medicine Best presentation (2012); Doctoral Scholars Fellowship (2003 and 2007); IGERT Fellowship (2004-2006); and, East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute Awardee (2006).
